Pompei was an ancient town which was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius (the volcano) in 79AD. It's very well preserved and they are still uncovering it to this day. It is open to the public so we went for the day. It was about ten minutes from our hotel so it wasn't far. Tripadvisor warned that it gets very hot and there is no shade. We didn't heed this warning and set off with no water and little sun cream.
The site was absolutely massive, and there were no signs anywhere telling you what was what.
It was amazingly preserved and all of the cobbled streets and some buildings were intact. When they uncovered the site under the ash from the volcano, the holes that were left from decomposed human bodies were filled with a clay mixture so you can see the positions people were in when they died. It was very poignant and interesting, and there were whole families with children on the floor covering themselves up. We couldn't get over how sophisticated the town was but we couldn't imagine being there without wifi. It's strange to think these people were alive 2000 years ago and not a lot has really changed physically.
The reviews were right and after a few hours of wandering the busy streets of old Pompei in the blaring heat we had had enough. There was no shade and it was so busy. We got lost on the way out so it took twice as long. The town is about the size of Appleby Magna.
We went back to the hotel and Paul went to do the laundry while I sorted out our order and hotels for Spain.
We then went to a steak house and I had a pitta bread with pulled pork on it. We shared some sangria as well, it was lovely!
