Ellie and I have arrived in Delhi :) We've been here for one night, first night we spent in a hotel called HOTEL TODAY, and today we're in HOTEL SPOT in a road called Gali Chadiwalli (or something like that). And it's been a busy couple of days!
So we arrived at the airport at around 3pm on 2nd, with a taxi costing around 550 rupees (about 5 pound), it was a 30 minute car ride that showed us a fair bit of Delhi life! We saw three stray dogs in the first 20 mins! Along the way the taxi stalled and ofcourse a cart pulling bike went in to the back of him, breaking his tail light, and then at several points, in heavy heavy traffic he got out of his cab and dissappeared from sight....we were a little worried. But he came back, so it's all good.
I've noticed some other things as well: cars drive about an inch from one another, and even more so in heavy traffic, there are no lanes or lane rules! And the beeping mentality I do not get! They beep when there's heavy traffic and clearly no room for manoevre, they beep at 3am when there are no other cars on the road, they write 'beep horn' on the back of their cars, as thoughits 'for fun' although no one looks like they actually are having fun when they do it....On the roads there are cows pulling carts by ropes in their noses, bicycles pulling carts, people pulling carts, mopeds pulling carts, then taxi's and the famous TUK TUK :) then on the smaller streets where the markets are, there are horses carrying massive sacks of rocks. Larger industrial trucks use the roads in the middle of the night, which seems sensible seeing as theres no room for them in the day time.
Another thing I've noticed is there isn't much ethnic diversity here, I've seen a handful of white people, a couple of oriental looking people but thats it! London is a lot more diverse. There are also WAY more men than women. Men rule the roost here in so many ways...not sure I'm a fan. Oh and a little fact for you: Delhi is approximately the same size as London, but has 4 million more people in it. Mad. Oh and there are some big prey-looking birds hanging about I don't know what they are....?? They aren't vultures I've checked.
We ate a lovely meal last night, at a (probably chain) called Fresco. It was a buffet and it was BUFF stuff :D However we did KIND of forget the rules about what not to eat....we ate vegetables, ice cream and salad...but that was a good 20 hours ago and we're fine so....Tonight we are going to eat our first Indian Curry :) at a place over the road for a pound!!
People are very friendly here, probably for many different reasons but friendly, none the less. We've found two markets - One is called CONNAUGHT PLACE and the other...I'm not sure. Maybe the MAIN BAZAAR? ITS AMAZING anyway. Just. Amazing. So cheap, for silk, cotton its so good! Like a whole outfit of silk will cost about 7 pounds. Or a top made of cotton I got yesterday cost me 1 pound. Amazeballs. I got some 'real' Ray Ban sunglasses for 3 pound :D they're good copies anyways.
Oh and it definitely isn't as smelly here as what people made out it might be like...
So here we are, sat in our hotel internet cafe, waiting to meeting Mrs STA for our 'Youth of India' programme. I'm a little anxious because I've seen the level of poverty for children here, and the standard of care for them.....its not going to be easy me thinks.
Hope England is ok :) its 24 degrees here by the way - blue skies :D Just saying.
