17th September - On our third day in Srilanka we headed up to Kandy to see some elephants! We opted to take the train over the bus to go to Kandy as we really had no idea what bus and the times we were meant to be going with, I think it was also a 1 million hour journey, however, we were so glad we caught the train! It was a four hour train ride to get to Kandy and as we got to the station our train wasn't for another good hour and a half so we had some to kill! This involved some silly traveller games resulting in Ryan's loss leaving him the penalty of biting into a garlic tablet! By the look on his face (and video to follow) we knew it was not a nice experience! Following on from that exciting incident the toilets were needed, Jenna went and found someone who worked on the platform and they gave her a door handle and a key… She entered the dark dirty room in the corner of the waiting room and said it was one of the worst toilets she had ever used in her entire life (bearing in mind she has done a lot of travelling and dirty toilets before) Ryan, being Ryan then had to join in and go and do a poo, (also for everyone's amusement there is a video to follow his experience) Finally, after a long wait, when it finally arrived the train was absolutely heaving with locals and school children, as we all tried to bundle on with our bags, leaving me (ellie) and Jenna literally hanging off of the train door (this however is normal in Sri-lanka) - we got pulled off by one of the staff at the station and because it didn't look like we were going to get on, at all! He took us to the back of the train and opened a large door to the luggage compartment and in we got! It may sound strange but we couldn't have been happier with our seats (the floor of the empty baggage compartment). We had the best train ride ever with the whole empty luggage carriage to ourselves and the door open wide, loving our lives, we were hanging out the train watching the scenery go by… and the cows. After an enjoyable train ride we arrived at Kandy. We checked into a nice guest house with two beds and our own on-suite! 'Anjulia's' we were paying roughly … The one worrying thing was that on the door, printed in large writing 'Please keep your doors and windows locked when leaving the room because of the "Monkeys". At first we thought they were joking, until we went further into our adventures and realised that monkeys had the run of the town as they pleased. We finally ventured out onto the town by tuk-tuk! We had a nice meal at a table service restaurant, followed by a walk around Kandy town. We tried to find a decent bar that served spirits and beer for a reasonable price! Our tuk-tuk driver on the other hand had a better idea, he took us down some back roads behind a large supermarket, we all got out and was taken through a big gate past all the locals (feeling famous and important) and was locked in at a black-market bar! We finally got our alcohol for cheap and tuk-tuked back to our little guest house and chilled there for the evening.
