Just had our first bad experiance of the trip. We booked a sleeper bus from the north of Vietnam to the South, that allows you to jump on and off at certain towns on the way, and we were supposed to leave Hanoi for Hoi An a few days ago, but Lina had a bad allergic reaction and we had to get on the bus the next day, which meant our seats wern't booked. The man at the hotel said there may only be two beds available, and that one would have to stay in a put up bed, but when we went to the depot to get on the bus we were told there was actually no spare seats and we would have to sit on the floor for 12 of the 18 hours of the journey. We had already stayed in Hanoi for one night longer than we first wanted to, and we really didn't want to stay another night, so we wern't really left with any other choices than to just deal with sleeping on the floor. Luckily, I'm a pro at sleeping, so I managed to get some sleep on the floor, but I think the girls had a hard time dealing with it, because obviously there was no air con, and it was pretty cramped.
We finally arrived feeling achey, tired and sticky to Hoi An. Luckily, Hoi An was worth the discomfort, because it is so beautiful here! It's a fishing village, and all the building were built by the French, so they are so beautiful and old. The streets have been closed from cars, which makes it alot less stressful than Hanoi. There are so many amazing restaurants here, and so cheap! When we first arrived we hadn't eaten in over 24 hours, and we all just craved pizza. We went to a lovely little restaurant called Good Morning Vietnam, which is run by an italian man, and we had delicious homemade pizzas and pasta for only 4 pounds each including drinks!
We then looked around the tailor shops (there are over 500 tailors here apparantly) and I've ordered some handmade hareem pants, for 6 pounds, which I'm going to pick up tonight.
It's now our second night and we just finished eating at another fantastic restaurant, where I had red tuna steak in seasame seeds, with a coconut, wasabi and lime sauce, that came with mashed potato and an asian style coleslaw. this only cost about 4 pounds!
Last night I met up with my Vietnamese friend Sophia (who is a friend of a friend at home) and she took us to some really cool beach bars, and we all went on mopeds to a club. We had a really good night and it was nice to speak to some vietnamese people our age.
Hoi An is a beautiful little town, but quite touristy, there are alot of Auustralian people here, I think they must come here with they're family for a week holiday, like we would go to spain or france. Actually, a good description of Hoi An would be an asian version of Alcudia's old town. It's nice to have a break after the intensity of the capital!
