hi ~ we made it to the beach!! The weather in Tucson for the last month was great so we had lots of pool time but it is SO nice to be by the ocean (and the weather is still really nice). One thing I forgot to mention in the past blogs was we walked along the wash beside the park in Tucson to a bridge- at dusk hundreds of small bats flew out -it was an amazing sight! Then a hawk got in the middle of them but we didn't see it be successful in it's hunt.
We spent April 1st getting the trailer fixed (no joke!) and made it a little way towards California. Lots of brown desert and cacti - gradually left the saguaro behind, crossed the Colorado River (the border between Arizona and California), through the Palm Springs area where there is lots of irrigation so more greenery, even in the midst of California's terrible drought. It got to over 90 degrees, even though there was snow on the local hills, we were glad to be just passing through.WE are glad that diesel has been a lot cheaper this year than last ~ more expensive in California but still cheaper than home. We drove over a 4,100 ft pass up onto the high desert where we spent the night in a rest area. Then down again off the desert into the horrible Bakersfield area (lots of smog) - again irrigated so lots of farming and palm trees. The drive across to the beach was on a narrow, very windy road for about an hour ~ Malcolm was not pleased!! Still, here we are on a beautiful beach, sunny days and Tess just loves running and running (oh, and digging :) Some friends from Tucson have just arrived so we're going for dinner with them tonight then one more day here and turn the truck's nose north. Should take us 5 days to get home and we most likely won't have internet along the way.
bye for now,
Elinor and Malcolm
