Yesterday we were up early. Ali was the first to leave, then Steve - back to Canada. Dreadfully hard to leave Millie, she will be fine of course but we will miss her terribly. Felt bad leaving Clive as well - his 60th birthday looms and we will still be away. Our flight turns out to be BA. Very crowded and Ian very short of leg room. For some odd reason my WHOLE BODY swells - except for the bits compressed by flight socks.
It is clear as soon as we land that Singapore is an orderly place. Lovely taxi driver pointed out local landmarks and and explained some things. There was a sign in the taxi saying NO DURIAN with a picture of green leaves. I wondered if this might be some illicit drug but no, just a very popular but very SMELLY local fruit. Hotel fine, sun goes down almost exactly 6pm and we go out to eat, deciding on Little India.
Not a good start to Wednesday, both of us waking at 3.30am then falling back to sleep only to wake again at 10.00. After breakfast back to the room, my throat is on fire. The journey has really taken it out of us and we both vow: never again! When we eventually emerge from the hotel it is like being draped in a warm wet blanket.
The city is very clean - chewing gum is a criminal offence as is littering. The city could be almost anywhere in the world except that we have seen no signs of poverty so far.
It is incongruous to have signs in English, not just written in English but with English street and place names, reflecting the colonial past. Driving is on the left too.
