Had an amazing two weeks in Kenya with the fam and Daisy. Despite getting off to a rocky start being bumped off the flight from Nairobi to Mombasa we managed to lighten the mood (with a bit of help from the man in mustard in the top hat!). Mombasa beautiful but the poverty very moving also. Plenty of water-aerobics later we moved on to the safari (not forgetting to mention one very close encounter with a coconut!).
Flew out of mombasa in a very very small plane taxi - interesting experience. Even more interesting was landing in the middle of the masai mara on what can only be described as a dirt track - seeing elephants from the plane pretty awesome! Greeted by masai taxes upon landing, in a very official 'hut' (see pics). Left for our first taste of safari and almost immediately saw a cheetah having just made a kill. Also had our first encounter with lions.
Hotel 'tents' were amazing, although perhaps worryingly close to the perimeter of the camp considering a huge pride of lions lived in the area. Hearing the animals at night and watching them pass by was incredible. M+D lucky enough to see herd of elephants walk past one evening.
By the end of the safari we were lucky enough to have seen all the big five except Rhino. We got to see a leopard thanks to John the driver and all the usuals, as well as Meercats which is apparently very rare. Favourites had to be the Pumbas - soooo cute! We also got to visit a Masai Camp which was amazing - definately recommend the warrior dancing in the lion hat!
Left John and the Masai, back to Mombasa for the second half of the hol. Spent time soaking up the sun and eating soup! After a great 2 weeks (thank you!) headed home to earn some more mulah before leaving in Jan.
