Just thought I'd update you on my first 2 days at the training ranch. We got up bright and early to be ready to leave the place we're staying at 6:30(!). They split the 9 people here into two groups, and our group tried the motorbikes first. I was literally TERRIBLE. Could barely reach the ground with my stumpy legs and so kept falling over ever time I slowed down. I was so bad in fact that when the rest of the group were ready to go off and explore the farm I had to be left behind to stop myself from getting hurting! Was pretty embarrasing/gutting but at least I knew I wasn't likely to be good!
The afternoon was far better, as we got to do horse riding. There was quite a mixture of abilities in my group so they explained every very basically before starting. I got put on a little mare called Molly, who didn't look like she would be too fast but as soon as we got out of the small paddock there was no keeping up with her, she was off like a shotgun! Galloping up a hill in the farm dodging trees and low branches is one of the best things I think I've done in a long time! We didn't get back to the place we're staying until 6:30 so we were all pretty tired. And achey. And covered in bruises. Happy though!
The next morning the girls got to go on the quadbikes. (Apparently they separate girls and boys for this 'cause the boys tend to be a little bit mental!) I was a bit sacred that I'd be rubbish after the disastrous motorbike attempt, but actually I found it pretty easy, once you got used to shifting your weight around the bike. We spent a couple of hours going up and down creeks and hills in the farm. There was also a miny 'race track' which I think I had a bit too much fun on. I definitely enjoyed lapping people at 55kmph :D.
This afternoon we were introduced to the tractor (although didn't get to drive it!) We also got to drive a 4x4, which was quite an experience after only really having driven the yaris with a 0.9 engine... I didn't find it too tricky so that was good. Tomorrow we do fencing in the morning then mustering the cattle in the afternoon. We have to decide whether to do it on horseback, quad or motorbike. I know which of those I DEFINITELY won't be choosing, but can't decide between the other two now! Keep in touch xx
