No more Team Splice, a whole new crew.
Surrounding Flagstaff are 3 national monuments. Wupaki, Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater. These are where the ancient settlers used to live. They are now national parks. We spent the first day at Walnut Canyon. Half walked the fence with Jason our supervisor. I stayed back with ATG our fencing guru. We were putting in a gate, we also had an archaeologist with us, just incase when we were digging we found something. I got to use the power drill and my childhood dream of a jackhammer, it always looks like so much fun when you go past the road work guys back home, and it was. We also mixed 15bags of concrete. After work we drove down the rough road to find some flat land to sleep on. Everyone set up tents or slept in the van, I just slept under the stars again. We all sat round the fire drinking hot chocolate and roasting Mcmassive marshmallows. I woke up during the night and my sleeping bag was wet and in the morning it had ice on it. ATG is going to be late so we are just hanging out in the sun waiting, i went exploring up the hill and found some bones.
Yesterday we didnt start work till 1030, and i walked the fence with Jason and we found a spot that hunters had prob cut through to fix. And that was all the work for the day. We went to the Walnut visitors centre and walked the island trail. Around 75 to 400 people used to live here in homes carved into the rocks. Then we drove over to Wupaki and set up camp. Mine was easy im sleeping under the stars again. My first days work at Wicked Wupaki, I got to stretch wire, tie it off, SPLICE, run out new wire, and dig holes into the rocks with a punjar. We were about to leave and Jason and Max had seen a bull coming close to the fence, and the fence isnt done so we dont want it close to the fence. They were trying to chase it away but having no luck. So I ran over to help and picked up a stick on my way, and then as I got closer I saw its massive horns, so I new why the others had kept there distance. So I gave it a fright, slapped it with my stick that just shattered, so slapped it with my hand and it moved up the hill and away. So much fun. Just sitting by the fire and looking forward to sleeping outside again.
Fri - Just as I got into bed last night we all heard the Coyotes howling, so some of us howled back and as I woke up I heard them again, so I wonder how close they got to me while I was asleep. Last day of work I just removed posts with the punjar and did more stretching. Then we drove back to Flag past Sunset crater.
The crew was awsome the supervisors where great and the food was one of the best, very good project.
Sat - Homecoming - Big party day. Started with Tequila sunrise and then a big parade through town that started with a air force fly over. I spent some of the morning with Lesley and the afternoon with Thomas where we went to the homecoming Football match. It was really cool. We had the chants down by the end of the first quarter, sitting with all the drunk students made it more entertaining. Then I went out for a farewell dinner with Thomas, Lesley and Adam. Adam shouted us all pizza for dinner "Thanks Adam". Then we went to the train station to see them off. I was really sad it sucks when people leave especially 2 significant people from team splice. I will see them again soon just like most of the ACE people.
Photos will now just go on Bookface commonly known as FaceBook. It takes ages to load them onto this site, but seconds on BookFace.
Im still having a blast, ive got a really cool project next with great people. And just have one month left in the USA before heading to Canada.
