We arrived in Ulaan Bataar with no prior hostel and as we had read good reviews about the UB guest house we excepted the free ride back to the hostel. The guest house is situated in the centre of what is a very small ugly predominently soviet built capital city but despite its apearences it is very easy to warm to the place as the mongolians seem to be friendly and the surrounding mountainous landscape is breath taking. The first couple of days were spent roaming the city spending most of our time in the black market a massive place selling everything from mongolian horse sadles to indian snuff. We also sampled what we found out to be the staple drink in mongolia which is sour tea. The mongolian food, although basic was a relieving change from russia and as a substantual meal cost little more than a pound we ate like mongolian war lords. The evenings was spent jamming in the small but very friendly hostel where it is impossible not to meet someone interesting and with travel stories to share. We also watched RAMBO4 which is the most intense film in which at one point salvester rips out the throat of a burmese soldier. MADNESS
