28th april
went walking around again before going back to the hostel we'd stayed-in for the 1st and 2nd nights in shanghai to play some pool and catch-up with Ian and Andrew, the 2 safe northern blokesd we had gone out with on our 2nd night.
we went for a meal in a very cheap muslim resteraunt where they hand-pull the noodles right in front of you. we then went for another walk along the Bund, this time at night, and I took some pictures of the famous skyline again. The ammount of people selling pointless touristy s*** and beggars is huge, you cannot walk more than about 10feet without someone shouting at you 'hey english, come look, i make special price for you'/'money please'.
we returned to john's flat in the evening to find that Leroy was dead! it looked as-though he had starved to death. we had tried time-after-time to feed him but nearly always he had just spat-out the food and looked at us with his beady eyes dissaprovingly. he was only a terrapin so we weren't too upset, more dissapointed with him at being such a JOKE of a pet. we are going to leave his shell somewhere really cool. Then we watched the simpsons with John and Chris until the early hours and crashed-out again.
29th april
we went for a walk to find some breakfast (some spinach cakes and herb pancakes) and went to meet-up with Chris. John was at work all day but we'd aggreed to go into his work in the evening and give a talk to his students about our trip so far. we met-up with Chris in the 'french concession', a part of shanghai built in the 1860s with predominantly french architecture: loads of whitewashed walls, terricotta roof tiles, plane trees and expensive french resteraunts. it makes for a very nice area to stroll around. Chriss then took us to his mum's appartment (a VERY nice place on the 36th floor of a modern towerblock with amazing views of the french concession) and we sat on the balcony eating dragon fruit and sipping kiwi juice.
Chris then took us to pick-up histurntables from some a flat inhabited by some columbians and a very funny little chinese dude called Fun (a very fitting name). the columbians reminded me of some characters out-of GTA, only much more friendly and easy-going and much less criminalish. after jamming with these guys for a couple of hours, we went to John's teaching school to give our little presentation.
Confusingly situated on the 7th floor of a shopping mall with very unhelpful staff, we eventually found it and went-in to meet john who was busy teaching a class of young chinese people. We drew-out a map of the world on a whiteboard and explained our route, told some stories about our trip, and showed photos from my camera on a big tv. after the class had finished, we went with John to a small BBQ resteraunt, which was very tasty and after returning to johns flat briefly we met-up with Chris and Fun and headed-out on the town again.
we went to the I Love Shanghai bar where we had some very nice cocktails and went to a nightclub called 'Windows' whos clientelle was a little strange to say the least and drank lots of whisky. we went to a burger/chips place just as it was geting light and got a taxi back to john's and soon fell asleep.
