We couldn't consider our journey to the mountainous region of the south island complete without seeing Mount Cook! This is the highest mountain in Australasia and training ground of the great explorer Sir Edmund Hilary (first man to climb mount Everest). It has been quite a good coincidence to see this place and see Hilary's museum during this trip as both me and Benedetta have been reading Greg Mortenson's book: "Three cups of tea" which describes some of Hilary's accomplishments.
Mount Cook sits in the middle of quite a spectacular mountain range, but it is recognisable straight away nonetheless. With it's double pointy peak it stands tall above the other mountains and the Hooker Valley.
We set out for the Hooker Valley trek which took us right underneath the base of the mountain which also had an amazing frozen lake. Mt Cook is apparently one of the most challenging peaks to climb and after seeing it in the flesh we can firmly believe it and we are happy to have watched it with awe and respect from the distance.
On our way back from the amazing mountain trek we visited the Sir Edmund Hilary museum which showcased his amazing expeditions and finished off the day by treating ourselves with a delicious blueberry muffin and coffee!
