Ed's Travels
Hello from India!
I have now arrived in India after a brief overnight stop in Sydney on the way. I arrived in Sydney at about 8 in the morning so it gave me the whole day to explore the city. I headed straight for the two main attractions in sydney, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. I have to say it was realy surreal seeing tem and actually being there after seeing them so many times on postcards and TV.
I wandered over the bridge and up one of the supporting pillars, which gave a great view of the Opera House and of downtown Sydney. I then had a tour of the Opera House which is absolutely stunning. I did not realise that there are 2 main performance halls, the Opera hall and the Concert hall. Both were amazing inside and i wish i had had time to see a concert in one of them.
Then on Friday i flew from Sydney to Mumbai via a brief stop in Darwin to refuel. I arrived in Mumbai at about 9pm local time to be met by a driver from the hotel where we were staying. It took about an hour to get across town to the Hotel on the waters edge just along the road from the Gateway of India. Here i met up with Dad who had arrived earlier in the day. The hote was very nice and had the added bonus of a rooftop restaurant that serves very good, cheap food.
The next day we decided that we were going to cross the Harbour by ferry to Elephant Island. It was absolutley baking and really humid but when the boat was moving tere was a nice breeze. over on the island we wandered around looking at the ancient caves that are carved out of the hill. After a couple of hours we headed back to the hotel for a late lunch on the roof. Then after an afternoon of catching up on sleep after crossing loads of timezones we headed out for supper at a restaurant that was mentioned in the Lonely PLanet as THE place to go.
We were meeting up with a couple of guys dad had met the night before who were on their gapyear and had been traveling around India for the last couple of months. We also bumped into another couple who dad had met who said that the restaurant was regrded as the best restaurant in Mumbai and in the top 60 in the World. And i have to say that the food was really really good. I had a beef carpachio to start with which was a raw as you can get and just melted in the mouth and then i had a lobster and shallot rissoto which was very tasty. It certainly makes a change from what i have been eating for the last couple of months.
Anyway tonight we head off oa sleeper bus for 16 hours up to Udaipur where we shall be for a couple of days before heading on to Jaipur.
I will try and keep this a liitle more up to date than i did in New Zealand when and where i find access.
