Welcome one and all to my latest blog entry!
This past week has been rather different compared with the previous ones. Last weekend I was snorkelling and sightseeing at Pulau Pangkor, enjoying a beautiful island and good company. Then I had a bike accident which resulted in ambulance rides, trips to clinics and hospitals, and a different start to classes for the year.
I had been touring the island on bike with some friends, when at the end of the trip I had an accident caused in part by another rider, and in part by inexperience. When I came off I fractured/dislocated/rotated my right little finger. I was taken to a public hospital (like a war hospital), where they attempted to realign my finger. Three days later I was at a (Western-style) private hospital asking for them to try again. At this point it's not known whether I'll be able to use it properly again. At any rate, it's a minor injury, and I'm glad nothing worse happened :)
My classes are good so far, and I have friends in each one. The tutors are pretty laid back as well :) I think I'll be able to do alright this semester, as long as I can focus on my work. For 'Tropical aquatic biology' we have a 4-day field trip to the Perhentians, where we will be able to SCUBA dive - very exciting! Not being able to use my right hand I have had trouble doing basic things like writing, eating and washing, which is a bit frustrating. Nevertheless the week has been pretty decent.
I wasn't sure what to do this weekend, and I had Friday off, so Tim F talked me into joining him and some others at Cherating (a surfing village on the East coast). I didn't want to go because I can't get my hand wet at the moment (no swimming/surfing/kiteboarding), but I decided to go anyway ang just try and enjoy it. And I'm glad I came :) This town is a bit of a dump, but the beach is nice and the atmosphere is really chilled. They have some really good food here too (a lot of it Western)! Tomorrow morning holds a river cruise where we may be able to some cool animals.
Thanks for writing to me and letting me know what's happening at home - I will reply soon, it's just hard to do with my left hand :)
Talk soon, Eden
