We'd been at Tara Raft for 5 nights. We found out on the last morning that they serve breakfast. We were both delighted and dismayed at this fact as we had walked to the high street every day to get food when in fact, it was served in our own accommodation.
We had a knock at the door by the 'Visit Beyond' tour guide at exactly 11am, as they were there to fetch us for the Lake House Adventure. We decided to take all our water with us as we knew we were getting given water throughout the day, but we went through at least 1.5 litres and had a feeling they weren't supplying us with that much water. Edd scanned the room and picked our packet of water up off the table, knocking over the water glass we'd been provided with by the guesthouse, shattering it on the floor. 50 Baht please, Mr Steer. We were doing so well, past tense.
We climbed in the mini bus taxi and met a young Danish couple who were travelling through Thailand much like we were, but for only a month, and a Danish family with 2 young girls, aged 6 and 18 months. We left Kanachanaburi town and headed for the countryside. We stopped at 12pm for some lunch at a local restaurant, but I wasn't hungry and picked at my food - we'd been having breakfast at 2pm every day the last week, so 2 meals by 12pm was a bit more than I was used to. I'd managed to resist the urge to stroke every cat in sight with the exception of the guesthouse cat I'd named Sylvester. There was a baby tabby, (like my Sabre) with a short tail, roaming around the restaurant however, and I gave in. He/She (I didn't check) purred away in my arms as I scratched him behind his ears. I decided I needed to get a cat as soon as we possibly could. I missed cat loving in my life.
We then had a 2-hour drive to a gas station that can only be described as a Thai suicide mission. Edd and I were both incredibly carsick as the shocks on the mini bus had expired many moons ago and everyone on board complained about the way the driver jerked the car, by not keeping his foot at a constant on the acceleration pedal. Edd had a few stern words with the guide about the shocking driving and marched off to buy us ice creams.
The driving for the next hour improved, but we discovered it then became a race between the mini bus drivers (there were 3) as to who could drive the fastest, the most dangerously and in front. He took corners on the wrong side of the road, on a blind rise, round a corner. Edd couldn't help himself and shouted at him from the back of the mini bus, as he kept doing it and on one particular occasion, there was a car 50 metres in front of us! We were all genuinely surprised we'd got there safely and decided the adventure part of the tours' name, (Lake House Adventure) was in fact the dangerous driving to get there.
We were then long tail boated over to the house in the middle of the lake and all sat in the communal area for a briefing. We were then allocated our rooms and Edd and I headed to the end of the passage; our room was number 8, on the right, and we were greeted to a large corner room with a sliding door, 2 windows, a double bed, cupboard, couch and 2 small chairs. There was also a pink mosquito net suspended from the ceiling above the bed that had been tied in a fancy knot. We'd done well; we were staying in a slice of heaven. The House Boat was then pulled along by the long tail boat, which honestly did not seem possible, moving along at 2 knots an hour.
After a while the long tail boat stopped and we swam in the lake - or more like Edd swam in the lake, I watched - and I decided I'd watched far too much Discovery channel programs. Who knew what creepy crawlies lay beneath the calm waters edge? I climbed in holding on to Edd to get wet, then climbed out again. Happy hour was between 5 and 6pm with 2 for 1 cocktails, so we ordered a Mai Tai and Mojito. (Getting 2 of each and swopping our spare so we had one of each flavour). We had dinner at 6pm and were briefed on the next day's activities by our guide, Tom. He was a slender Thai man, quite short, with a moustache and a German demeanour. We then went to our room to relax, play some cards and enjoy our fabulous view.
We decided to take a shower, cold, at about 10pm and bug sprayed ourselves. Edd had a reaction again and had to shower to get it off. It was official; he was allergic to our bug spray. We arranged our bug net around the bed as there was no air con and we were going to be sleeping with the sliding door and windows open. We tucked the net under the mattress so as not to miss any potential entrances for little critters. He got a peg (we have a little washing line over our sliding door) and pegged the entrance shut. The only issue we still had was the little bugs that had already managed to get inside, we decided to mozzie spray the inside of the net and the bed ended up looking like a graveyard. Edd then became hyper vigilant about the opening to the bed, like a bug net bouncer: no body in, no body out.
