We had breakfast on the balcony by the pool again and Edd and I went downstairs afterwards to fetch our bits for a day of relaxation. He creamed up and grabbed his hat, I got the laptop out - it was blog time.
The sun was harsh today, which meant it was a good day for tanning, but our balcony didn't have any large umbrellas, so I hid under Edd's mums sarong as I felt my skin turn into chip nicks. Edd swam in the pool, deciding today was a front tan session; his dad sat and read his book in the shade and his mum soaked up the rays - it was going into summer in England, so it was a preemptive tanning session to avoid a translucent bikini body upon return. Priorities. I was finished after 12.15pm and it was G&T o'clock, perfect timing.
I went downstairs, got changed and grabbed my hat - it was winter in Melbourne, so I had to get as much sun as possible, before we hit the cold in a few weeks - and those weeks were looming nearer.
We decided to skip lunch today as there was a tea on at 3.30pm that included cake. We got ready and went downstairs, Edd folks and I ordering tea while Edd stuck to gin (smart boy). Our cake included a corn fritter, banana thing coated in a white flour of sorts, a small piece of cake with grated coconut icon and fried banana in a gloopy syrup. There was apparently a palm leaf carving workshop on at the same tim, so I was excited to learn another new art trick.
It turned out to be palm leaf folding, which was fun, but I didn't carve anything. Edd's folks went and had a massage (it was included in our stay) and Edd and I went and had a little lie down on the bed (exhausting day of swimming and tanning). His folks came back, relaxed and well oiled; we got ready to go into town and waited for the shuttle at 6pm.
We were dropped off opposite the palace again and went in search of a list of restaurants that were potential places for dinner. After a few duds and bad menus; we settled for The 3 Monkeys, which was a restaurant overlooking paddie fields, literally. You could accidentally miss a step and become one with a rice plant. The ambience was amazing and their spring roll starters, to die for. We all ordered beef in coconut milk curry with a pyramid of rice, which was cute.
We had originally decided to have a drink somewhere else, but then ran out of time walking back - one, because I tried on 2 dresses that I though were pretty, but were average or awful on and two, because we'd walked further than we'd realised and it took longer to get back than we'd anticipated.
We caught the 9.15pm shuttle back to the hotel and instead of having a night cap there, all went to bed instead. The Afrikaans saying is "maagies vol, oogies toe." (Stomach full, eyes close; it rhymes better in Afrikaans).
