In Angkor (Siem Reap), Cambodia.
Since the last time of writing in here, as usual, much has happened.
More than two days ago we were in Bangkok, enjoying the city's exclusive offers and the sweltering heat that follows you every where you may find yourself. On the 4th, it was the most interesting time in Bangkok. We'd met some other people and we set off to the SkyBar at the Dome. A very high and very luxurious place to take photographs and buy anything. The beer was 9 pounds, the water about 4 pounds. You could only take photographs from the bar. Live music, perfect views, you could see a different side of the world that not many Thai people have ever seen. Spoke to a cab driver in Bangkok the same night and he said he'd never been up there. Nor had any of his friends. It's a shame to have such athing and 95% of the country being unable to witness it. It's like having the tower of London and many Londoners never being able to see it. What's the point? It seems only tourists visited that place, and very rich tourists too! But the night was not over yet, we returned to our hostel (that felt to us just as good as the SkyBar) to change and go for a ping pong show. Dear readers, if you have never seen a ping pong show, I'd recommend never to see it. It's too disgusting to describe. Not a trick or anything, but just women's bodies being used to the perverse pleasure and curiosity of tourists that think they'll see something different (I being one of those tourists). And just like the online pages describe, you get to see different "acts", each for about 5mins long. If you barter well, you get a beer with your ticket, as well as a free ride there and back from Khoa San Rd (one of Bangkok's busiest street). After the show, I was shell shocked, couldn't sleep all night, until the morning when I was so exhausted that I had to sleep, but only for 4hrs.
The next day (5th of June) a German guy who was staying at the hostel needed to sort some stuff out and I wanted to do some bumming around, so we joined forces. We saw some shopping centers and visited Siam Aquarium, South Asia's biggest aquarium. Got my feet nibbled by fish, saw sharks and many other strange and wonderful marine life of Asia. Charlotte and Emily had had a very bad day at their attempts at seeing the temples (they hadn't seen them at all). They'd spent the afternoon arguing with tuk tuk drivers about their destination and had been pushed into going into many clothe shops for the benefit of the tuk tuk drivers. Needles to say neither of them were very happy. Actually Emily was so pissed off, all she said was 'Fine' when I asked her how the day went. She didn't look it but I left it at that and went to sleep.
6th of June we'd booked a tour of Cambodia, starting from Bangkok, and into Vietnam. Strangely enough the girls were still in a very depressed mood. Must've been a bad dream or something. Or maybe I snored and kept them awake. Or maybe they were still annoyed with yesterday. I wondered. Em on the other hand had take the previous day's annoyance to another level, not only snapping at me about a rounding up of a sum of money to transfer to her account, but also saying zip beyond that throughout the whole day. I know I'm not a very interesting person, but things cannot be that bad. So I ask Charlotte, who manages to say something, but again very little, and everything's OK. Hmmm?!! It may have changed from fine to OK, but things didn't feel that way to me. Especially when I was getting the cold shoulder from Em and the quietness from Charlotte. That evening we met with the rest of the group that we were meant to travel through Cambodia and into Vietnam. They were very nice, and mostly female. Went to dinner and began making friends, and one thing that seemed to stick out was Em's chattiness with everyone but me. I must be missing something here, right? Have I done something to piss her off? We shopped the Lampini Park night market and went by metro (a new addition to Bangkok) But I get a goodnight from the girls, so maybe tomorrow it'll be better. Yet I couldn't sleep, not being one to miss my sleep over nothing I try and watch films all night and think what has gone wrong here.
7th of June. Early breakfast and bus to the border of Thailand, crossing over to Cambodia and into Angkor (where I am right now). The girls are quiet, but Em's again very chatty with everyone, but nothing on my way. I ask again if things are ok and so they are, says Charlotte. On the way to Angkor the option was given to all of us about the next day's activities of visiting the different temples in here (Angkor area) or doing your own thing. I think they'd like this so I agree (they were seated on the other side of the bus so difficult to see their reactions or hear their ideas). But they then say they'd like to try doing their own thing tomorrow. Interesting, there must be enough of temples for them from Bangkok, so I'm stepping out of the tour the next day and thought I'd chat with my friends about what's actually wrong. Good plan I though. Then we go for dinner at a place recommended by our guide (Nuddy - no dirty thoughts here, she's very a nice woman with a large….personality). We sit and we watch the local shows put upon us by the restaurant. As soon as dinner's over, up go Charlotte, Em and this other guy that Em's been chatting to most of the time during the tour. No word. No warning. No 'hey, do you want to come?' Admittedly I was seated on the other side of the table and had some of the people around me, but I would've thought that coming to a tour together would mean sticking together, everyone else was. So I wondered, walked back to the hotel and tried to sleep. Talk tomorrow I said to myself. Since they said they didn't want to go to the tour this morning (8th). Wake up and try to ring them at their room. No answer. Go downstairs and speak to Nuddy, bless her cotton socks, didn't want to go to the tour of the Temple, she'd seen them many times before. She explains that they enquired about if I was coming and having explained to Nuddy the previous day that I was sleepy and I'd like to sleep today a little longer (just to wake up later and speak to C+E), and they'd gone to the tour after all. When they come back, i finally gat to talk with them. It seems my ignorant self had neglected to mention a few things to my friends, like when going off to do things with guys i'd met the previous night. Also shouting at Emily on a talk, when Charlotte said something and Em couldn't hear, i shouted in an angry. Although i don't remember the angry shouting, i can see their point of view. Things may not be OK, or fine for some time, but i think this is better than just parting our seperate ways with misunderstandings about recent events. We'll see. For the time being i'm around, and opened ears and low voiced without any anger (i think). But then my face isn't always a happy one (just by nature) I have to work at pulling a smile. Blast it
