4th of July maybe Independence Day in the USA a celebration of freedom....but for Edwards/Davis tour we were anything but free. This was a travel day, so we were either stuck in the car, waiting in an airport lounge or trapped in a plane. For the entire day it poured with rain, so it wasn’t even worth stopping anywhere on the trip from Rotorua back to Auckland. It meant we got to the airport a little early and had an.unremarkable flight to Christchurch...where it was still raining.
5th of July...still raining. Luckily we hadn’t planned a lot. Christchurch was more of a stopover before taking the Tranzalpine train to Greymouth and onto the Franz Josef Glacier. While Alex and Jane looked around the CBD, shopped and took in a movie, Ali and I went to try a few craft beers. We started at 3 Boys Brewery. Being midday on a Friday we were the only ones in the tap room. We had a taste of about 5 beers but settled for a glass of West Coat IPA followed by their standard IPA. Ali scored them at around 3.5 (out of 5). We sat in an upstairs lounge that overlooked the brewery. It was then into an Uber and onto Smokey T’s for a late lunch. This was an American style BBQ where meats are cooked and smoked for minimum of 10 hours. We had a plate stacked with beef brisket, sticky pork spare ribs, shoulder of lamb, jalapeño and cheese sausage, waffle fries and coleslaw with pickles. I think the small serving of coleslaw was to make you feel like you were at least eating one proper vegetable (although it was smothered in creamy mayonnaise). Glad I took that extra statin tablet. We washed this down with a glass of Smokey T’s American pale ale, described by us both as “acceptable”. Ali and I then walked around the; corner to Pomeroys pub, a place renowned for its huge selection of craft beers. Being the responsible drinkers we were we settled for an IPA from Wellington based brewery, Garage Project. It was freshly brewed and released in July. It was fresh and juicy, packed with citrus and pineapple flavours. The pool table was free so I thought I’d show Ali the skilful art of cue and ball. Two mature aged locals looked on in disbelief as we took at least 10 shots each to pot 1 single ball. It was nothing to do with the number of beers we’d consumed, as we only had 4 glasses over a period of less than 4 hours. After about 20 minutes these 2 gentlemen couldn’t take it anymore and they told us we were s***... or in kiwi “shet”. We were both so bad that we ended up chasing the black 8 ball around the table until Ali eventually brought the agony to an end and accidentally tapped it into a pocket (most likely not the one he was aiming for). It was than back to the Airbnb for more food and pack up for the next bit of the NZ adventure.
