We have just spent 2 nights (1 full day) in Vienna. It wasn't meant to be much of a site seeing visit.... more of a rest day and a means to get better train connections. I'm not sure whether we have just seen too many museums, art galleries and cathedrals, but both Jane and I found Vienna a little boring. Some nice buildings in the middle part of the city, but not much else. I wasn't into Mozart, waltzes, Heidi, snow skiing or those horses from Spain ....Lippizaner's or however you say/spell it. While Jane took the odd photo, I didn't even bother. We did visit the Gallery at Belvedere Palace famous for Klimt's "The Kiss"..... Then noticed that every tourist shop sold "The Kiss" T-Shirts, snow domes, pens, coasters and bags.... all made in China if course. Apart from walking around the main tourist ring in the city centre, we bought a 24 hr ticket for the tram and did some random riding around. There were 2 things that provided some light hearted amusement. the first was a couple of guys dressed up in Mozart type gear with powdered wigs trying to flog tickets to some orchestral performance. The funny thing was, one of the guys was black.. so his Mozart impression was was not very convincing. The second thing was that the tourist shops had those Australian road signs with a picture of a kangaroo. The writing on the sign just said "no kangaroos in Austria" .... OK , so it wasn't funny, but in a country not known for it's humour, I think it is as funny as it gets.
We have one more night in Austria in a town close to the Italian border called Villach. For us its to break the journey to Venice otherwise we would have to endure a 10 hr train journey. I had tried to get a sleeper, but was unsuccessful. I don't think Villach is famous for anything. Knowing our luck, if Austria needed an enema that's where they might put the tube! I will report later.
Addit: Villach is quite nice, so please ignore the last statement. Very picturesque with Alps in the background and cobbled streets. A bit quiet at this time of year, but apparently goes off like a fire cracker during the ski season.... Or so I'm told.
