Elizabeth & Dawn European Travels
-Dawn-
The past three days in London have been quite nice. On Saturday we went to 221b Baker St. the fictional home of the infamous Sherlock Holmes. There is now a museum there and a replica of the apartment as it is described in the novels. We got to take our pictures sitting by the fireplace with hats and pipes :) After lunch we headed to Westminster Abbey, unfourtunately we got there an hour after it had closed to visitors so we couldn't go inside. We attempted to go again today during the hours listed, but were foiled once again b/c there was some special ceremony being held and so it was again closed to the tourists. I suppose I will just have to visit London again if I ever want to see it. Since the abbey was closed we went accross the river and took a tour of the Globe theater and got tickets to see Shakespear's "Titus Andronicus" as groundlings (the audience that stands in front of the stage the whole play). That was definately a cool experience we were right up next to the stage and since there was a lot action taking place in the yard we were continuously having to move around to make way for the actors and crew in amoung us. I could see very well for almost the entire play, except the last 20 minutes or so when a very tall person went right up to the stage and blocked everyone's view. I even asked him to kneel down or something b/c there were like 10 of us behind him that couldn't see that well and he was very rude and just stood there. And he wasnt just tall to me (I came up to maybe halfway between his bellybutton and armpits), Elizabeth thought he was tall too and she's like 5'8". Either way the play was quite fun. On Sunday we went shopping at one of the outdoor markets and found some neat gifts for people, then we went to mass at one of the local cathedrals, which was also a cool experience. Today, Monday as I said we attempted to go to Westminster Abbey again but failed. It was a rather rainy day so we came back to our hotel. We also discovered that it was the queen's 80th birthday and she was this huge birthday celebration behind buckingham palace for hundreds of children and their parents. It was really cute, they had a show where the bad charaters of British children's liturature (Quella DeVille for example) stole the Queen's handbag, which was bad b/c the queen's spectacles were in there and she couldn't read her birthday speech without the spectacles, so the entire party was being delayed! Anyway, all the good charaters for literature were trying to get the bag back, even winnie the pooh and harry potter were helping:) They were finally successful, the queen gave her speech and everyone sang happy birthday and had cake. It was pretty cute. Anyway, tomorrow we return to the states, so this the last of the Journal entries. It's been a really awesome trip, thanks to everyone who helped make it possible for us to do this!! :)
