Elizabeth & Dawn European Travels

Today, was dedicated to Vatican city. We woke up at 6:00am and took the matro to the Vatican. We got in line to the the Vatican Museum by about 7:15 and waited in line till the museum opened at 8:45. Once it opened we were at the head of the line and got into the museum in only 5 minutes. The museum is a lot like the louvre, you could spend 12 years in there and still not see everything! We headed towards the Sistine Chapel and on the way saw many frescoes and paintings and statues and artifacts. The sistine chapel was particularly impressive. It depicts many scenes from the old and new testaments (it reminded me of St. Marks Basillica in Venice, but using a completely different art style). There was also this really awesome gallery of ancient maps of Italy. They were very cool and some had sea monsters drawn in the water or ships at battle with each other. So, after the museum, we went to St. Peter's square which you see in the picture. In hopes of attending Mass. Instead of a Mass there was a Papal audience being held and the Pope was greeting various groups in attendance in all the different languages. We made it in time to hear his greeting to all the English speaking persons present so that was kinda cool. Then he got in car and rode around through the crowds a bit. After getting to see the Pope, we had lunch at the family owned reseraunt that served very yummy pizza. Next, we went into St. Peter's church, which is the most massivve building I have ever been in, it's HUGE!! It's also georgeus, and we could take all the pictures we wanted b/c there are no actual paintings, all the artwork are mosaics. After seeing the church we went below and saw the tombs of the popes and of St. Peter himself (I guess he is considered the very firt Pope). I also got to talk to one thew swiss guards in order to ask directions and he was very nice. Well, after that we left Vatican city and reentered the country of Italy to catch our overnight train to Paris and go from there to London. Ciao.
