Espana!
Coming into port is Christmas. Especially after 8 days without a glimpse of land. We rose at 6:30 (like I mentioned we would before) and I discovered that we actually could go to the front of the ship…I spent 8 days being oblivious to this sacred spot, a dunce I am! We busted off the ship (and I do apologize that my blog posts may be a little list-like but there is hardly sufficient time to compose an elegant one! And I figure an ugly blog is better than no blog at all) and got some café con leche right away and some chocolate con churros (which I, no surprise, ordered wrong or the waiter was mistaken and he brought us hot chocolate instead of the thick chocolate that you are supposed to dip the churros in but I dipped happily anyway!) we roamed around Cadiz and got lost and had to run through the streets stammering for directions back to the ship so I could make my first trip - I made it and spend the next four hours taking a guided tour of the Archeological Museum of Cadiz and then a walking tour. I went with SAS (Semester at Sea) to a flamenco show and bloodless bullfight where we drank Sangrias and ate the most delicious tapas I have ever tasted (the only ones, at this point, but the best). Later that night we (and the we will most likely be the same "we" from now on so I might as well introduce my new amigos - there is Brittany, Carly, Kaitlyn, Lindsey, and various others at times) went out to have a drink and we talked in broken Spanish and broken English with a lot of hand gestures with some locals at a bar directly in the narrow streets of Cadiz! We went to a castle, rummaged around the tide pools, went to the beach, visited an old Roman theatre. The next day, and I will stop explaining in such detail or this will get too long and I will feel bad for the things I leave out, I took the SAS day trip to Sevilla - cathedral, Giralda, Alcazar, and a delectable lunch! The final day, Tiffany (the SAS videographer) came with us when we went to the tower and cathedral in Cadiz, we went to their local market and I think we will be in the SAS video! We ran into the ocean after some contemplation and went swimming, the others had their swimming suits but I didn't have mine but I figured that my clothes were just as good and I am in Spain for crying out loud! The past three days have been ridiculous. I have never worked so hard at school in my life. I had three papers due, a global studies mid-term, on top of reading two books and other classmates writing in my writing class…all in two and a half days! I haven't had time to blink. It is pretty interesting to see the places we find to study on this ship…hallways, coves, early mornings…there is hardly a quiet place….apparently no one else has to do any work! We are going crazy. I am overwhelmed but, with Italy coming tomorrow morning, I am content and uncontrollably excited! Last night, the interport student talked to us about Italy and taught us a little bit of Italian, so we shall see how I do… The sun rises at 5:42 am tomorrow and we will be up and out on the deck to greet it and to greet Italy! I will be figuring out a better form/structure/flow for these blogs in the future so that they are less of a scattered mess! I will also try to post some pictures soon…we only get so much free internet so I have to find some free wi-fi in Italy perhaps so I can share pictures, which are entirely more captivating than these posts! Sherri - I love your envelopes! I love to have something to open for each country and your tidbits have already proved useful!! I saw the famous dancing Andalucían horses, saw Christopher Columbus grave - it is in a raised coffin in the Cathedral in Sevilla because it is said that he did not want to be buried on Spanish soil…hence the raised part! I took a picture. I also did stumble upon some half-nudist beaches so I am glad that I had your letter to forewarn me! I will open the Italy ones tonight!! I cannot wait!
Signing off,
No longer a ginger snipe for the time being, the Mediterranean waters are calm and so I am just a plain snipe. Though I could very well be a kit kat snipe because I eat one or two nearly everyday.
