Then its onto Taquile Island for our homestay, there are no cars on the island, no hotels and little or no electricity! On arrival we are allocated a Quechua family to stay with. These people are small and I had to crouch down to get through their doors!
We play an insane game of football at 3000 metres above sea level which left me fighting for air. Just climbing the hill to sea the sunset was exhausting. I've cut fizzy drinks and beer out of my diet as I've felt sick from the altitude and even nauseous sometimes with food.(which is so unlike me!)
We are split into groups of 2 and dinner is served in the homestay families kitchen in candle light. The kitchen has a fire where the meal is cooked and branches for fuel fill the corner of the room. The evening is spent in the ¨discoteck¨ the men wearing tradition pancho dress and the women wearing the peoples brightly coloured dress´s. A local ¨band¨played and we danced with the locals - again no air to breath!
The next morning is spent reading and sunbathing on top of the boat traveling over the lake after a pancake breakfast from our Quechua families. This is leaving the dream!
On the way back to Puno we stopped at the floating Reed Islands of the Uros people. This was an amazing experience traveling in their reed boats and seeing how the islands were constructed. The roots of the reeds provide the buoyancy and the reeds are crossed over the top. The Islands were floating some 16 metres from the Lakes bottom! The sun was shining and I even brought some souvenirs! I enjoyed this day so much seeing lots of Peruvian culture.
This tour is fast paced, im now in Cusco preparing to go into the amazon tomorrow! Good job Ive got a massage booked when I return because the next day I start the Inca Trail which I feel is going to be tough in attitude!
