I think it is around 600km from Byron bay to Sydney but don't quote me on that!! Lerrisa was heading back to Melbourne with Katie who I'd met in Brisbane. By coincidence we were going in the same direction at the same time.
Australians are very out door people because of the quality of their weather. Thus there are free BBQ's pretty much everywhere - you just get your food, put it on and off you go. I had a tendency to buy the BBQ backs of meat for around $10 consisting of steak, lamb and sausages - pretty cheap when spending the mightly pound!
I found Australian campsites (mostly) were also well equiped with BBQ's, kitchens , wash facilities and swimming pools. I say mostly - we stayed in Coffs harbour and Port Macquire all which were excellant. One night in Bateau, on the other hand, in a trailer park was pretty minging with the water being undrinkable even in tea. Plus the place was rubbish too but nevermind - traveling is all about ups and downs - smiles and frowns.
Campsites charge by the person so we found we could get into these sites for the price of 2 by covering the person in the back of the car in a camoflage of backpacks, towels, boogie boards and general rubbish! The person in the back was yours truly - check out the picture where you can just see my eyeball amongst all the bags!! LOL
Katie and Lerissa were both into obtaining as many freebies as possible thus we relieved hostel kitchens of cups and cutlery, road stops of salt and pepper sachets - I think you get the idea!! Nothing major I must add!!!
A camping trip wouldn't be complete without some Goon. Goon is a slang name for ridiculously cheap wine of such..it's fine as long as you don't mix it with any other booze and provided entertainment when concocting forfeits for the losers of card games! lol Poor Lerissa did the forfeit in Port Macquire - she took it well when I confessed to rigging the cards!! LOL
Coff's Harbour is not a particularly popular stop on the east coast and therefore it wasn't packed with people which made it very relaxing on the beach. It also has some very impressive botanical gardens with plants from all over the world.
Port Macquire is larger than Coff's and more popular but I spent alot of time relaxing and reading near the pool.
So, further on from Port Macquire is Palm Beach which can be accessed easierly from Sydney. This is where Home and Away is filmed and I was hoping to bump into Alf Stewart but no such luck. Visited the surf club (surf club official - A Stewart) and walked the beach acting out various Home and Away plot lines!! LOL " ya flamin g'lar sal!"
Onward to Sydney!!
