Sunday morning was a late start for us.The girls slept in while Robert and I took an early morning walk around Zurich. We seemed to be the only ones on the streets. We checked out where to pick up the rental car (just a few blocks away) and walked to a lovely park up above the Limmet River overlooking Zurich and the churches we saw yesterday. It was a quiet moment in a beautiful place.
Back to the hotel to wake the girls and get breakfast.(Included with the room—generous Swiss buffet.)Took our time getting packed, then picked up the rental car and headed to St. Gallen. It was fun to retrace our steps from 14 years ago and find the familiar roads. We drove into St. Gallen and found a favorite bakery (closed on Sunday), the house we stayed in and a swimming pool.It was raining pretty hard, so we stopped our adventures and drove into town to look for a place for lunch.
After lunch and reminiscing by walking around town, we toured the Library in St. Gallen.Very cool place that had been a library in a monastery that had been founded in the 700's.The floor has an intricate inlaid pattern and you have to wear special slippers over your shoes. You can imagine the fun!Lots of Latin for the girls to read and incredibly old documents to see.
Drove to Appenzell in the afternoon.Again it was a familiar drive.Found our cute hotel in the middle of town and walked over to the cemetery. You can see from the pictures that this is a beautiful place in the heart of the Alps.Plus, they plant flowers covering all the graves. It makes for a picturesque scene.
Walked through town (not far), had dinner and ice cream and headed back for the hotel. As I write this, our windows are open (we've been chilly most of the day) and rain has started to fall softly again outside. We are warm and cozy and ready for sleep once again.
