Arrived in LAX!!!!
We've been here a week now and it's been crazy. Los Angeles is officially the most insane place I have ever been to. Johno and I have been pretty ill with our bug from Fiji so haven't managed to fit too much in and even missed seeing Dr Phil after we managed to acquire some tickets! Booo! However, we still managed to see a lot of LA and by far my favourite place was Santa Monica.
Santa Monica beach was so long and huge and the pier was pretty in a kind of retro way with its ferris wheel and ice cream stands. We managed to do a lot of money with very little funds and even bumped into Ron Jeremy - not sure I'll be bragging about that though. A short walk up the prom revealed Venice Beach. Home to drug barons and skaterboys and of course the infamous muscle beach....I should point out here that I didn't actually see anyone actually working out at muscle beach. The monkeys just tended to stay in their little pen flexing at each other. Very bizarre.
A few free comedy and open mic nights later and we did manage to see the real LA scene a few times but its so fake and mentally unstable that the tourist hot spots were good enough for me. Walking down the street...sorry boulevard, people would constantly stop and talk to us. We even met a rapper called Star who apparently knows Snoop Dogg and kept trying to flog his cd to us while rapping about out english muffins.
The highlight was easily Warner Bros. studios! We actually got to walk around the ER set and I sat in the waiting room of County General! Alas, Carter never came to fix me, but a girl can dream. We took a peak at the set of Friends' Central Perk and even got CGI'd into a picture with The Hogwarts Express!!! Then came the ultimate honour. I was sorted by The Sorting Hat. I nearly swooned at its leathery goodness but if you're not a Harry Potter geek, or in fact are just remotely normal then you won't be able to appreciate my delight at finding out that I really am the stuff of Gryffindor!!
After the excitement we thought it prudent to try one of Americas most prized delicacies...Taco Bell. It was the single most disgusting thing I have ever had the misfortune to eat. Which is surprising as I did eat a slug as a child. The only culinary delight that I experienced in LA that really was whole American goodness was the ever constant Maccy D's. You know that if you had a Big Mac from Moscow and a Big Mac from Fiji that they would taste exactly the same but in LA they were cheap as chips too!! Yeaaaa!
As for the LA population, they were mainly tourists and even then the only encounters we had were with people yelling out of their cars at us, the odd nice old guy who called us M'am or a rather unintelligent barman called Bran. Well I can't remember what his actual name is, but he was a vacuous aspiring actor with the personality of a Bran Flake.
I have to say, LA was not my cup of tea. It was still crazy and full of bars with upsidedown lamp shades and breakdancing tramps but just not for me.
