Hey guys,
We stayed in Nelson for 3 nights, partly due to the bus not leaving the day we wanted but turned out to for the best anyway. The weather travelling there from KAikoura just poured the whole day so lucky we were in a coach i guess. We stayed in a dorm with 2 German girls, also on the magic bus.
First night we found a local pub with its on micro brewery, very nice, the sprig and fern. I would recommend the pale ale and best bitter, even Sarah liked the pale ale, she had a couple! For dinner we had the free soup at the hostel, it was pretty much boiled vegetables with hot peppery boiling water!! filled a hole tho.
Second day we went to a place called happy valley, just outside Nelson where they do different types of activities. We decided to do the skywire they had there, it involved going on a 1.6km zip wire across the forest at around 90-100km/h. It was so good and we've got some good footage of Sarah screaming her head off!! The views from up there we incredible we'll have to upload the pohotos. We got shown round the forest a bit, saw a 2000+ old tree, pretty impressive. Later that day we ventured up a local hill, pretty high, to the centre of New Zealand, again some impressive views. We then wondered into Nelson itself to get Sarah a couple more tops after someone had pnched hers during the night while drying outrside our dorm!!! Some how they chose hers over mine and everyone elses outside, bad luck i guess!! The weather was great today so had a pizza and beer in the sun and chilled out for the rest of the day and evening.
Third day we went sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park justg north of NElson. It was an early and cold start, 6.20 on the coach, but well worth it. The weather picked up to be probably the best day we've had. The sea was calm as you like and made for good kayaking for the 5 hours we were out. The day invovled us getting a tamdem kayak and then with another couple and guide we set out paddling around all the beaches. The scenary and beaches were more caribean than NZ, not what we thought it would be like at all. We stopped off a few times on the beaches for picnics, sarah loved this!!!, and a couple of walks. It was so beautiful. We then got taken to a secluded lagoon where it was so so still. We had to go for a swim and as it was so clear i thought i'd try out my new underwater camcorder. It worked well which was a bit of a relief. It didn't last long tho, i played back the footage and all i got was a red screen and then nothing at all, checked the battery compartment and water everywhere, even in the SD card. Gutted to say the least. Going to have to spend the next few days drying it out and praying itg works again. We then headed back on the aquataxi and got the coach back to nelson absolutely knakered. But still had time to vist the pub again for a cheeky pint and fish and chips. the fish over here is amazing!!!
Next on the trip is Greymouth which from the look of things doesn't have much going for it.
