According to the travel journals of 19th century explorers of the Central Asia region, getting here is fraught with peril, uncertainty and difficulty. For us it was no different. The first flight, for example, from Heathrow to Istanbul, afforded the passengers the opportunity to see the classic 1960s remake of Mutiny on the Bounty, with Marlon Brando as the humane Fletcher Christian, who finally overthrows the tyrannical Blythe. However, with Blythe adrift in the Pacific, and Christian now in command of the vessel by struggling to control his crew of mutineers, at the throbbing climax of 3 hours of cinematic suspense-building, our plane inconveniently landed in Istanbul. So I don't know what happened. If anyone can Google the ending of the film and post a summary up I would be most grateful.
Other highlights included a group of people loading their guns onto the plane in London. I'm no security expert, but I thought the days of carrying a shotgun into the cabin were long gone. However, I guess it's all one big learning curve. Fortunately, it turned out the weapons were legitimate, and the Great Britain paralympic shooting team was off for a competition in Turkey.
OK, enough of that. We're now in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan. For some time, I was excited that Kyrgyzstan might be the only country in the world with only one vowel (I don't get out much), but annoyingly we've now thought of three more. Fans of cheese, sausage, ceese and sausage, sausage and cheese, chausage, and seese would love the menus here.
Right, we're going out to the bazaar now. Hope you're all well, and enjoying quite as much sausage and cheese as we are.
