The Castaways
Laos is amazing! It's so beautiful!!! We left Huay Xai after one night (and there really wasn't anything to do there at all!!) on the slow boat heading for Luang Prabang. We choose the slow boat which takes 2 days rather then the 7 hour speedboat which apparently is a death trap!! The slow boat was ok and we literally went through all mountains and great scenery so it was ok, although did get quite uncomfortable. We had an overnight stay in Pakbeng as the boat only travelled during the day! And my Pakbeng was an experience. We were conned into pre-booking a room and when we got there is was awful so we had to pay to upgrade our room and even then it was a sess pit. There was only electricity between 7-10pm because it was a little river side village so we had to get everything packed and sorted while we had some light and apparently a hot shower! Which it really wasnt. By 6am the next morning (after a night of full on storms and lightening that lit the whole room) we were getting ready to leave. So we got on the boat and headed for Luang Prabang and was relieved to reach there. It was really nice, right along the Mekong river and we found a nice little guesthouse. There was a huge night market even though the town was fairly small. We visited the Pak Ou caves where there where all buddhas in limestone caves and visted to different Laos villages, one being a whiskey village where they pickle bears feet, a massive cobra and other little insects such as centipedes and scorpions. From here we are getting a bus to Vang Vieng which is supposed to be great so we are looking forward to this.
