Friday 17 September
Well, a little waste of the morning waiting around til 1pm for the BLAST! Heres the story!
Packed up slow, fuelled up then hit the playground / skate park for an hour. Around 12 we drove up to the SuperPit lookout to get the best seat for the blast,,,, but , alas, it was cancelled.!!! Bummmer Bummer
Never mind! Headed straight south 360kms to Esperance, arriving around 5pm in a little caravan park.
Saturday 18 September
Slept in a bit today – more cloud than sunshine but at least it wasn’t raining! Drove around to the Tanker Jetty to see ‘ Sammy’ the seal, who is apparently a regular daily visitor to the jetty,,,,, BUT not today.... lolol
Headed along the coast south west of Esperance – a lovely ring loop drive but was advised just to do the coast and then drive back. Great little bays around every corner... and of course we saw a whale or two! Dave even had a surf! YES! A surf! He said as soon as his legs entered the water they felt like freezing up and sore! He met a guy in the surf ( another crazy b***** ) , who was from Palm Beach on the Gold Coast!! Small world! Back into town to collect a few supplies for our crossing on the Nullarbor tomorrow.
Sunday 19 September R.I.P Oma ( my nan )
Early up today, ready for a big drive.... Left 830am, into Norseman around 11am.. Had a break here and the kids burned off some energy at the playground. Then just drove....................
And drove...................
Crossed the 90 mile straight road ( 146.6km) ! The longest and straightest in Oz! Not much in the way of sightseeing but had a roo slowly hop across the road ( hahahah ) Camped at a P spot on the side of the road.....
Monday 20 September
Up and out by 8am today.... Another loooooonnnngggg stretch today. Uneventful night, besided the thump thump of roos and scratching in the grass!!
Drove about 60kms and then a steep descent at Madura. The view was amazing.... Nothing!hahah absolutely nothing but a lovely nothing... I know that doesn’t make sense! Hahah Refuelled at Mundarabilla @ 1.59 . l which was good. At Balladonia yesterday they wanted 1.71/l. Back in Norseman servo they gave us a list of the cheaper fuel stops.
Just driving out of the servo we encountered rain! Yes! Rain on the Nullarbor! Not really surprising as it is quite green out here. Only 80clicks to the S.A border .............
Stopped at Eucla Homestead ( town ) and headed for the old telegraph station built and operated in 1877. Mostly buried in the sand now which gave lots of photo ops!
Also met a lady , Sarah Mycroft who is 5 months into her ‘ First women to run Oz ‘ run and picks up sponsers on the way. Her latest sponsor from Perth being the JDRF ( Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation ) so we introduced Liam to her. She supports all sorts of natural products that affect Type 1 and Asthma etc....So there you go!
Stopped for a few shots of the cliffs and the Great Australian Bight. Lovely with the sun in the foreground and the rain and clouds in the rear.
Tuesday 21 September
After a ‘ funny ‘ nights sleep...... lots of wind then calm then dingos.... Anyway we had camped at an old homestead ruin just outside of the gates of the Head of the Bight. We missed out by ½ hour to get in before 5 last night so decided to camp and wait til morning.
Was worth waiting for! We entered around 9am and spent at least one hour watching all the whales. At least 20 in all.. 2 were mothers and their calves.... Some so far away and others so close. The photo ops were endless. And to hear the ‘ whoosh ‘ out of their blowholes... that is how close they were. JUST BEAUTIFUL... Boys enjoyed it immensely.... off in the car heading for the Eyre Peninsula. Stopped at Cactus Beach for a look. Was lovely.. No surf but scenery was fab on the way in. Pink lake one side and blue sea on the other of the road that went right in the middle!
Stayed in Ceduna....
Wednesday 22 September
A little sleep in this morning ( people behind snoring then singing in the morning though ! ) lolol . It is also difficult to adjust to the time difference of 1 ½ hours .... Also had a lovely big meal at the pub next to the caravan park. Dave and I shared a yummy scrummy seafood platter while Jack polished off a 400g steak!!! The size of the meals were huge,,,, so huge I had to leave some dessert! OMG I KNOW! Not like me at all hahahahah
Had a look at Daves old house in Ceduna... where he used to live and Doug ( Daves Dad ) used to work at customs.
Travelling south we stopped at Streaky Bay for a bakery lunch and supplies. Had a walk on the jetty and then hopped back in the car to get warm.... yes !it is b^%$#Y COLD HERE.
On the way to Ellison we stopped at Murphys Haystacks, a unique outcrop of pink granite boulders over 1500 million years old.
Travelled through Port Kenny to Venus Bay which was lovely.... lots of character and calm waters one side in the bay and rough wilde waves on the ocean side! Very quaint.....
We stopped in at Elliston for a camp for the night. Lovely family run park... Great facilities and so reasonable! Very nice! Liam wants to come and sleep again tomorrow night because they have a jumping pillow, a sand pit and cubby house with lots of diggers, scrapers and trucks!! Lolol
Off to Port Lincoln then north again tomorrow.... hope to pick up a few dozen or 10! Of oysters!
