Greetings all. After leaving Kununurra on Friday our first freedom campsite was at Spring Creek after a easy 200 odd k/ms. It's a nice shady camp which is quite popular but we were able to park by the river amongst other campers at a premium site. At night we joined a few others around a big camp fire which again ended up a great night. There are lots of road trains, (a full truck with 3 trailers)on the roads and they must get a little annoyed with us Grey Nomads holding them up at times and some of them have found a way of getting their revenge. When they pass your nice quiet roadside campsite in the wee small hours they give a long blast on their air horn at 110 k/m and I can just imagine that little grin on their face as it must break the boredom of what otherwise would be a long and lonely night.
Next stop over after passing through Halls Creek a very small outback town (where we had to pay 20 cents a litre to top up our water tank) was a another recommended spot called Mary Pool.
It was here we met a nice couple from NZ travelling like us for 6 months in a very large motorhome towing a car.
Again we ended up around their camp fire till late enjoying and a few drinkies with 6 other entertaining and friendly people all with good stories to tell.
Most mornings we get up between 7.30 and 8am, shower enjoy a nice laid back breakfast with maybe a second cup of tea then hit the road by about 9.30 or 10am. Well apparently we are doing it all wrong! Most get up early, some leave at 6.30am and most others are gone by 8.30 in a mad race to get going and secure the best spot on their next planned camp spot by midday.
Someone must be doing it wrong and were not quite sure who it is, us or them ???? That would be why we end up waving to quite a few while still enjoying our breakfast outside in our deck chairs in a very relaxed 20 deg morning. It's a tough life this holidaying! We may have it wrong but it suits us just fine.
Last night was spent at Ellendale Lake which is a beside a watering hole on private property in the bush not far from the road. As there was no wind and very warm as usual we enjoyed a lovely night sitting out under the bright stars till well after 8pm them hit the sack after a nice cooked meal. I was woken up in the middle of the night with the awning flapping as the wind got up.I was helped by Stephanie with words of encouragement shouted at me from her very safe and secure bed while I clad only in undies and a head torch was trying to retract the awning in the wind (watch out for snakes she yelled)
Great I thought.
This morning we were joined for breakfast by a bunch of cattle in the camp, no fences around here. When Stephanie went to take this photo she saw some people we had camped beside about 5 weeks ago so once again a small world.
We arrived at midday today in Derby which is on the the coast of the Timor sea and it's very hot but we are by the sea again which feels great! I bought a fishing rod and crab pot today so fingers crossed for tomorrow. This is a very interesting place as the tides when there is a full moon are 11and a half metres. At the moment they are 8 and a half so we are looking forward to seeing them tomorrow.
Catch ya soon.
