Well we rode up to the Medieval town of Gubbio yesterday... Patrick rode his bike, and I rode in the van for most of the day. Apparently my butt wasn't conditioned properly for these cobblestone & potholed roads! We had a free day today which pretty much everyone was thankful for (especially me!) We were suppose to have our free day tomorrow in Spello, but the Festival De Ceri was happening in Gubbio today. It's a crazy celebration that the whole town and outlying areas participate in every year. It basically honors three different Saints and they race these giant candle like structures (called ceri) through the streets of the town up to the main church at the top of a huge hill. The same Saint, St. Ubaldo wins every time, probably because his mummified body lays in a glass casket in the hilltop church! The festival goes from 5am - 5am. It rained pretty good today and these teams still ran through the streets carrying the 1500lb ceri. Look up the Gubbio Ceri festival on YouTube, and you can see just how crazy it is! We were lucky to have been here for it. Back on the bikes tomorrow, a shorter 43 mile ride. Hopefully I can hang! Buonanotte!
