We started early today for the long trip to Kununurra.
You have to travel from Darwin back to Katherine then head towards Western Australia. The trip was very uneventful.
We stopped for the night just before the WA border at the Keep River national park. It was a nice spot with only a couple of other campers. That night to our surprise we discovered a cane toad. We did not know that these pests had made it over to Western Australia, so we made it our mission to capture and hand in the toad to save WA :). The kids watched in histerics as Lucas captured the toad and imprisoned it. The next morning we got another nice surprise with a Taipan under the car. The kids had been walking past it all morning with thongs on. Luke used his snake wrangling training and removed the snake from our camp.... thanks NSWFB.
We drove towards the border with trepidation, due to our previous experience with Bev ( see earlier blog). We had been warned that this checkpoint was the most serious of all the states. I had drunk all the alcohol, we had eaten all of our fruit and veg and there wasn't a plant in site. As it turns out, the guy was very relaxed, he didn't even want to take our toad...so we carried on with our visitor on board. The nasty critters are all over WA....we sent ours to a new home where he will live happily ever after.
We set up camp at Kununurra and started to transfer all of our world to the car for our camping adventure on the Gibb River road. The kids located a crocodile sitting in the water across from our van...it's ok, it's only a freshie, not like the ones from Lake Placid...
That night after many arguments about what we did and did not need to take we joined everyone at the caravan park for a sausage sizzle. The highlight of the night was listening to 'Joy and Nev' sing....no not me, another Joy :)) although I was tempted after a couple of wines.
We went to bed excited about our trip to the Gibb.......
