Our train trip from Goteborg to Oslo was very pleasant. Once I had stowed our luggage to the satisfaction of the ticket inspector. Fast, clean and efficient. Our hotel was pretty much in the centre of the city. Sort of like an upmarket hostel but it fitted the bill. Oslo was certainly much busier than Copenhagen. Constant movement of people on the street. We had a stroll around the immediate area. It certainly had a feeling of some affluence. The Opera House is amazing. Built on the harbour and designed to look like an iceberg, it is certainly an iconic site. And again the public transport system is incredible. Trams and buses are everywhere. This morning we headed through some beautiful gardens towards the Royal Palace, complete with guards. Not sure if the royals were at home, however the flag was flying, so perhaps they were. The palace is surrounded by well maintained parkland which is open to the public year round. Reading the signs it seemed that you able to do almost anything in the park except have a BBQ. From there it was a tram ride to Vigelandsleggett, a massive parkland area where 212 sculptures by the Norwegian sculpture Gustav Vigel are displayed. Quite an impressive site and clearly very popular. All the sculptures, either granite or bronze, depict the human form. From here another tram ride to Akershus Festning, a 1299 Fortress built to protect the Oslo harbour. It is still partly in use today for military purposes. Oslo has been a really comfortable place to be. Modern, safe, clean, except for the constant intrusion of cigarette smoke. But I suppose 3 out of 4 is pretty good. Tomorrow we pick up our car for a 10 day road trip to the west coast. Let's see how we fare driving on the wrong side of the road.
