Nuremberg's history dates back to 1050. Today it is a beautiful city with the old town restored to its original medieval style, after 90% of the buildings were damaged or destroyed during the 2nd world war. The majority of the old town is pedestrianised making it a fantastic place to explore with a relaxed feel. Our apartment was located in the old town so most of the historic landmarks were in walking distance, including the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) which dates back to around 1628. Nuremberg's Christmas market is famous for gingerbread known as Lebkuchen, Nurnberger Rostbratwurst, Nuremberg's small grilled sausages & wooden toys. The markets attract over 2 million visitors per year with many organized tour groups amoung those visiting both day & night. The evenings were very crowded but the atmosphere was welcoming & friendly. Nuremberg is beautifully decorated with Christmas lights and is a joy to experience in the evening. We ventured out most nights just to enjoy this beautiful sight & of course partake of the many delights on offer. Surprisingly the temperatures were very mild for December so no snow to add to the Christmas card backdrop.
We have found Germans to be very friendly and noticed they certainly enjoy life, partaking of the wonderful food on offer but more especially the various varieties of beers & wine.
The main tourist attractions we visited were the Imperial Castle on the rocky promontory above Nuremberg which was one of the most important fortified castles of the Holy Roman Empire, Tanners Lane with the timber framed houses, the city walls of which 4 kilometres are still standing, many historic churches & unique fountains.
The river Pegnitz flows through the city centre with lovely old bridges from which to enjoy the reflections of the Christmas lights.
