Ostia Antica Port City of Old Rome
This contraption amazed me, it is a flour grinder, made up of two large and heavily shaped stones, one conical on the base the other basically a funnel shape on top and shaped to fit neatly on the lower stone. Wheat was poured into the top and the top stone was turned by either human or animal movement attached by handles in the square holes carved in the stone. When ground up the flour would drop through to the base and be scooped and bagged up for transport. A most brilliantly conceived contraption of which there were around 20 of still standing in this old granary building.
