Cruised overnight and arrived in Cologne at 10.00am docking next to the blue Musical Dome and the Cologne Gothic Cathedral. We left the boat and had a guided walking tour around Cologne City. Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city and has more than ten million inhabitants. It is the oldest city in Germany being founded by the Romans in the year 38BC. Cologne lies on the River Rhine and the city's famous Cathedral (KolnerDom) is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne is one of Europe's oldest universities. Cologne has more than 30 museums and hundreds of galleries. Cologne has its own style of beer called Kolsch after the local dialect word for öf Cologne". The oldest and most well known product ouf of Cologne is the 4711 Echt Kolnisch Wasser (original water of Cologne). It stems from the recipe of a Carthusian monk's which includes citrus fruit, rosemary and lavender all of which are dissolved in a light alcohol mixture. We visited the Gothic Cathedral which was magnificent inside with large stained glass windows. Pete and I walked around the streets of Cologne window shopping and continued through the park to our boat. We passed under some large trees and a bird dropped a load on Petes head. Lucky we were close to the boat so he could clean it all off. We left Cologne at 1pm for Koblenz which is on the Mosel River. Arriving at 7.00pm much later than expected, due to holdups at the locks, we had dinner and then had a walk along the waterfront of Koblenz near "German Corner" where there is a magnificent equestrian statue of Wilhelm I . There were also pieces of the Berlin Wall which are showcased to honor German re-unification. I had a really bad cold and needed to see a doctor who came to the boat cost me 168 Euros for the visit and medication.
