I have failed at my New Year's resolution, which as you shouldn't remember was to not wait this long again to update this blog. Nevermind.
I worked in Christchurch for a couple of months, found a Capoeira group to train with which was pretty much my only activity/social life outside of working, lounging about and reading (Christchurch libraries are awesome). I left a week before it started snowing, getting back up to Katikati in two days before returning to Auckland for a final week or so, spending time seeing family and preparing for the next part of my trip.
I then spent a week in Sydney, which frankly I have little to write about. It's a city in Australia, as my father would say (hi, Dad). It's clean and ordered I suppose, a fact that became more salient when I arrived in Bangkok.
I spent three nights there, then headed to Ayutthaya on the local train (no fancy air-conditioned express train for me, well, not for such a short distance). Bangkok is all the things people say it is, so I'll not waste too much of anyone's time going on about it. I've already seen more Buddhas than I can remember, made and discarded half a dozen friends, taken two to three times as many showers as there have been days and tried all kinds of new foods; including that stinky fruit I can never remember the name of, a crispy grasshopper, green mango (frankly it just tastes like it isn't ripe enough, which I believe is exactly what it is) and some little green gloopy rice-based rings you dip in something that tastes like maple syrup with sesame seeds. It's been fun, depressing, stimulating, tedious, worrying, tiring and uplifting. I don't think I can do this for another two months. Tomorrow I head north to Sukhothai.

Raph unripe mango chutney is great, grate it, add sugar, and various things, simmer it.
