Australia #2 - the East
I started in Brisbane and was going to drive to Cairns - but it would take too long and it is exhausting. Also, the Gold Coast isan hour south but you cannot swim in the ocean becuase of jellyfish AND it is REALLY expensive so no point.
Apr 13-14 Brisbane - The River City. I only had 2 days in Brisbane but could have stayed longer. It is not on the coast but in a ways on the Brisbane River. I arrived late so really only had one day to look around. I decided to do the earliest River tour. Up and down the river - there are so many bridges and really nice looking buildings, the condo's and farther down. The homes are really very nice. It is a very pleasant feeling and good looking city. At the river tour dock, there was a Sky Wheel, so I had to go on for the aerial view! Afterwards, I took a river walk down a nicely laid out walkway and park system; very family and people friendly.
The bad thing - floods. They have had several major floods which destroy a whole bunch of real estate but they keep building it back - not sure why except we all seem to - Calgary, High River - it doesn't make any sense to me. After visiting the museum, I see they are very proud of their river and its history - only the aboriginals who protested them were made out to be criminals. The rest of the Aboriginals were dressed in the high collar stiff clothing of the Europeans - it looked funny on them.
This is when I wonder who is smarter - those aboriginals who move or adapt the location of their homes - however primitive - away from a flood area or those of us who keep building in the same place. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again the same way and expecting a different result. Hmmmm.
After all the 'touring', I needed a diversion. They have a large theatre downtown so I went to the movie Divergent. I am a divergent - adaptable to new food, surroundings, ways of doing things; in other words according to Darwin - a Survivor. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding why people have a hard time adapting but I am learning to empathize. I had dinner at a street restaurant and met some guy who had the same views - great conversation, but not for everyone!
