January 19, Day 6 - Kande Beach to Lilongwe - The next morning was beautiful, so sad we had to leave so soon, but it's a long bloody awful drive. The 'paved' part of the road is only big enough for one vehicle so if you have oncoming traffic, both vehicles have to move onto the shoulder. About half way to our destination, a woman in a new Toyota 4 Runner cut in too soon and caught her rear view mirror on a metal bar on the side of our truck. It crashed into her driver's side window and it shattered. She followed us to the next police stop; they are at the edge of every province, and said we hit her. Needless to say, it took an hour and ½ there and another 2 or so hours at the local police station. The company ended up having to pay her $1800 US dollars because in Malawi, they can demand cash from out of country people. The reason REALLY, she wants to be paid more than the insurance would pay and she had to pay the police officer a bribe to say that is was our fault. One of the guys in our group saw the whole thing but they would not listen to him. How frustrating. We arrived at our destination too late for one of the activities and as it was Sunday, all the stores were closed. When we arrived at the campsite, it was dark and the camp manager had given away our rooms to another Nomad group. IT took an hour to sort that out. I finally got a room - anything would do I was so tired. The good thing was that we had fish from Lake Malawi for dinner and it was delicious!
