On Saturday we ventured down to Jacksonville Landing which is located in downtown Jacksonville on the St. John's riverfront. It was a beautiful day watching the boats go up and down the river. There are quite a few shops at the landing but we were surprised to see how many were closed
or out of business. I guess Jacksonville is struggling to
maintain and promote their downtown as are a lot of other cities. Don said Jacksonville is called the "City of Bridges" you can see many of the bridges in the background of our Jacksonville Landing photo album. One of the only bridges that was a draw bridge was the railroad bridge. We got to see it get raised and lowered for a passing train. In fact, we were on a footbridge at the time so the train passed right underneath us. Then later we saw the draw bridge being lowered again but there was no train and we could not figure out why they had lowered it as there quite a few boats waiting to go up river. Then we saw two railroad workers crossing the bridge on foot, one from each direction. So we assumed it was shift change for drawbridge workers or something.
We had beer in the Irish Pub and some chips and a margarita in Mexican place. Another nice day for us!
