We survived Cape Tribulation…. Well nearly! So we turned up bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to start our new job in Cape Tribulation which is located in the Daintree Rainforest and is said to be the oldest Rainforest in the world. We were working for Masons Tours which consisted of a shop and a café right next door to each other. At first the job seemed perfect for us as one would be in the café the other working in the shop. Accommodation was provided to us by the owner Lawrence who had a big house just a minute walk behind the shop & café. On first sight of the house we were really pleased, it was a big white house that looked beautiful on the outside…… but when we entered it was not so lovely on the inside! The place was really dirty, full of holes and worst of all bugs! As our manager Lawrence gave us a tour through the house there was frogs, huge wasps and plenty of spiders. Any how we decided to give the place a go as the money was good and as we were working for a tour place we were offered free trips and tours in Cape Tribulation! We began getting to work and spent the whole day cleaning the house, in the end we were pretty pleased with the result and thought we would take to the whole experience.
The job began straight away the next day with Dave in the Shop and Vicky in the Café. Which after a week or so was alternated so Dave got to work in the Café (Cheating asking Vicky questions how it all works!) and Vicky in the shop. Days in the Café went quick as there was plenty to do and busy periods, but days in the shop went slow with barely any customers at times but that left an opportunity to catch up on some kindle time! Overall we were pretty pleased in work, having free access to barista coffees all day kept us happy and drinking lattes till our heart was content!
The area of Cape Tribulation in the Daintree Rainforest was really quite rural with a big bendy road that goes on for miles with only a few attractions along the way! As we were promised we took full advantage of the free tours offer when we had a day of together. Our first choice was to do ocean safari which is a great barrier reef trip but due to high winds the trip was cancelled for the next few days, our second choice was Jungle Surfing, the clue being in the title, we were harnessed in a rode a zip wire across the jungle, tree-to-tree! We took some great pictures at the top of the world heritage rainforest meeting the great barrier reef! In the afternoon we went to Cape Trib exotic fruit farm for some exotic fruit tasting and a farm walk, this we thoroughly enjoyed! We also got greedy and visited two ice cream factories with our excuse being so we could compare which one of them was the better! After work we also enjoyed going the waterhole, walking down one of the boardwalks to one of the picturesque beaches, but had to watch out for the crocs, mosquitos and giant stingers!
Things then started to go bump in the night! … Quite literally! We were first pestered by the odd cockroach which especially Vicky didn't find amusing, then there was attack of the flies which happened one night around tea time millions of flies swarmed the house managing to get in, hang around the lights for a little while then die on the floor which created a huge mess for us to clean up! The next day Dave then went duct tape mad and started taping all the holes and windows closed! We were slowly but surely beginning to lose our patience in the house, which was also added to by the fact we were living off a generator (Yes.. it really is this rural!) which was switched off at nine o'clock at night and us having to switch over and use a battery pack to power a small light & fan, also we had no mobile coverage and if we wanted to use the internet we had to go to PK's hostel down the road! We decided enough was enough when we woke up one morning to the toilet being ripped apart by what we thought was a rat, a hole had been dug, skirting boards were ripped off and even the toilet brush was in a million pieces! This was later confirmed to be a rat when we finished work early to actually find the accused in the kitchen! We then made up our mind that we would leave Cape Trib and head back to the real world! We told Lawrence who requested we stay an extra week while he found some replacements, we agreed but knew we still had more to come with the house… and we were right, one morning Dave went to get a wasp from the toilet when a huge lizard quickly jumped out of a hole in the wall and ate the bug! We then had to live with a new friend around the house keeping us up at night as we guessed he went hunting for food! Pretty much safe to say we aren't made for life in the bush! Only have to walk for a minute before bumping into a giant golden orb spider, or a snake lying dead on the road!
