Made it to Curiabá. The 'entrance' to the Pantanal, north! The temperature was awful hot again and I will never complain about the weather any more... I'm never getting satisfied anyway! The good thing is that you can find the best fruit juices in the world here!!! I'm totally loving theese tiny 'bars' where you go in, order a juice, drink it while standing and pay on you way out! My original plan went down when the pousada I chose (from LP offcourse) didn't want to let me in. So I was walking in 35 degrees with my dysfunctional backpack (it's falling apart!) through the city! Drenched, I arrived at a hotel (again) and was ready to start the adventure of finding tours into the Pantanal.
The Pantanal is the largest natural freshwater system in the world, with a total of 180,000 km2. It is thought to be the most animal-rich area with highest concentration of animal populations of the Americas and is supposed to be one of the best areas in the world for animalwatching! Found a tour for four days and three nights which included boat trips, canoe trips, horseback riding, truck safari, piranja fishing and birdwatching!!!! I can't belive that I'm going birdwatching, one of the things I can't understand why people do...
So with our tiny ford focus, we went into the Transpantaneira, a dirthroad which is completely flooded half of the year and there are over 100 badly constructed 'bridges' to cross all the small rivers. I was travelling with a bask (spanish) couple who were great! My best tours in the Pantanal: Horseback riding! Of course I got a dysfunctional horse which was walking so slowly and the guide had to chase me to make it move faster. After some time, we became friends and I found the gas-pedal and he started trotting! The view of the pantanal was fantastic! Piranja fishing, which I sucked in! I lost so badly to Spain, with only two piranjas! Fishing with meat on a bamboo stick; loved it! Canoe trip in the morning, with houndreds of caimans hidden in the river! Throughout the trip, I must have seen 1 million black caimans! The sound of the animal life was amazing. We didn't see any rare animals, like the jaguar, anteater or anaconda, but I was satisfied with the loads of capybaras, caimans, jabin storc, deer, fox and peccary... So in total I had a good time
BUT (!!!!!!) my camera battery went flat on me!!!!!! The first time on this trip and my charger was in the town! Well, I'm not going to think more about it...
Towmorrow I'm off to Manaus, which is in the Amazon....
