So Wednesday we set off for Kakadu National Park with our guide Andy. A real life Crocodile Dundee. More on that!. I got picked up at 7am and we made our way out to Kakadu (which is roughly 200 miles from Darwin). After stopping to buy some alcohol we eventually stopped again at a picnic site just outside Kakadu Park for some lunch. After lunch we made our way out to Bowali Visitor centre, which gave us an insight into what we might see over the next few days. Next we motored onto Nourlangie Rock. Andy told us all about the Aboriginal paintings, the mythology and 20,000 years of history. We then took another drive out to our accomodation for the next 2 nights. It was basic, but comfortable. After a dip in the pool, we made a proper bushtucker dinner, mash potato, salad and lamb chops! Andy then showed us how to play the didgeridoo (is that how you spell it!). It was fun as we all had a giggle at each others feeble attempts to play. Our tour guide was amazing!, he had obviously been playing for years.
Next day started with a scare!. Nearly trod on a very poisonous brown snake, managed to dodge it and take a photo. We all hopped into the van and Andy took us out to Waterfall creep. It took us all about 1 hr to walk out to the waterfall, but it was definitely worth it!. A 100 ft waterfall, with a beautiful freshwater pool. It was only a matter of moments before everyone had stripped off and were swimming in the cool waters. We spent a couple of hours swimming, sunbathing and just generally gossiping! After lunch we had to drop 6 of the party back at the meeting point to be picked up by another guide. They had only booked for 2 a day tour, which was a shame as it only left 3 of us. The rest of the afternoon was spent walking the park and taking some amazing photos. After a short ride back to our campsite, a dip in the pool, a refreshing icecream, we decided to take a ride up to the viewing platform to watch the sunset. Due to low cloud it was a little bit of a disappointment, but still the views were breathtaking!. The rest of the evening was spent eating, drinking and telling stories! Andy had the best one! He told us how he got the huge scarr on his leg. During a fishing trip on the Adelaide river, he decided to dangle his legs in the water to cool off. Without warning a big croc jumped out the water and bit his leg. The only thing that saved him from death was his grip on the boat. Apparently if a croc feels some resistance during a bite, then they will let go until they feel safe to finish the job off! Luckily Andy was with a mate and within 90 minutes he was in Darwin hospital having his leg put back together!
Day 3 of the tour was the best. We drove out to Gunlom falls and walked through the bush for about 2 hrs. We had to climb rocks, walk waist deep through creeks until we found the most beautiful water hole / waterfall I have ever seen. While we were there we saw all sorts of different wildlife. Colourful birds, strange insects and a massive Golden Orb spider (which I nearly walked into!). After all the fun we had we reluctantly had to drive back to Darwin. The group had bonded so well, that we arranged to meet up that night for a fish bowl! and a dance.
