Vietnam Tour April 2011
12 April 2011
Gua Sai, Malaysia
Today, the 'big day.' I awoke at about 4.30 am in the morning. I was very excited. I tried to get back to sleep but after struggling, I managed to only gain another hour of sleep, finally awaking around 6.30 am. By now, it was time to get up!! After doing a bit of 'last minute' packing, we were off to the airport. When I got into the international terminal it was 9.20 am.
Parked proudly at Gate 03 was our Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER registration: 9M-MRC in all its Boeing glory! At 12.23 pm we boarded. My seat was 32F, the seating configuration being 2-5-2 (AC-DEFGH-JK), so I was smack in the middle of the plane.
At 1.10 pm we lifted off runway 23L with the large engines roaring. The flight was long (10 hours and 30 minutes) and the plane was loud. I watched 'The Middle,' 'The Big Bang Theory,' and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.'
On board Malaysia Airlines the food was good, we even got Kapiti Ice Cream! We spent a good part of the flight over Australia at around 5 hours! Every now and again the plane would climb and descend along the route. Once we had passed Australia we were getting really close to Malaysia. The light was fading and we began a nice descent into Kuala Lumpur. We glided through the cloud and over the lights, it was an amazing approach.
At 7.42 pm (local Malaysian time), we touched down in the Northern Hemisphere at KLIA. The interesting thing was that throughout the flight, the flight information screens were showing the position of the sun moving away and darkness catching us. When we touched down, darkness had caught up!
Inside the terminal, everyone was fascinated by the travellators, and after a reasonable walk through the terminal we reached the Pan Pacific Hotel at Kuala Lumpur, where we were staying in transit overnight.

The hotel was flash! We checked in, put our stuff in our rooms and headed down to the swimming pool outside. We swam in the pool, where through the trees, there was the tall control tower for Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
At around 11.00 pm, I went to sleep (about 3 am in New Zealand - so I had been up a long time). By the way, it was hot! (28-30 degrees Celsius). I stayed in room 666 and I could also see one of the runways, where I watched several planes take off and arrive.
