We arrived in Trujillo just after midday both feeling shattered and a little unwell and decided to take a tour to some local Pre-Inca sites that we were offered by our hostel. The tour started with a visit to The Temple of the Rainbow, a small Chimu (a pre-incan culture) site just outside of the city that had many engravings on the walls of rainbows, people and dragons. We then headed to Chan Chan, one of the largest archielogical sites in Peru which had a total of 14 compounds each covering thew space of about 4 football pitches!! We visited the royal compound and had a tour explaining the history and function of the site, again many engravings with a sea/fishing theme covered the site including a 6 metre high perimeter wall. The tour finished with a visit to Huanchaco, a small fishing village where the local fisherman still use reed boats that have been used since Chimu times (around 15th century) on which they surf the waves back to shore with their catches.
Our second and third days in Trujillo were very relaxed as we were both very ill, our time was spent walking around town enjoying the colonial buildings and sitting in cafes drinking as much water as we could! We met two young peruvians who we got chatting to in the main plaza and watched the best street entertainer that we have ever seen - we have a video of Ashley with him which will be uploaded asap.
On the final evening we took a night bus to Lima, an 8 hour journey that was surprisingly luxurious - it felt like we were flying first class!
