okey dokey - it's late and I'm starving, so this is going to be quick.......the drive to the Pantanel was fairly uneventful - I've become especially good at sleeping on the truck, but I put that down to multiple years of 8 hour trips to see Nana when I was younger. I think the people on the trip reckon all I do is sleep - but the scenery is not very exciting and I need to conserve my energy, not exactly sure for what, but something.
The Pantanel isn't quite on the same league as the Serengeti, but there's a lot of birds - the above picture is one I took of a black ringed hawk coming in for the kill - I'd like to say it wasn't staged, but the guides were throwing piranhas for the birds - but still a good shot none the less.
Apart from caymen and birds, the Pantanel was chocka full of s***ty mozzies and not many of the group survived the two days without being attacked - I had some fairly hefty reactions, but I was stocked up on Deet (agent orange) so I fared ok.
We spent hours in a truck driving down one of the roads and only managed to see a few capaybaras and some howler monkeys. MOst of us were over the trip by the end of the day and were calling to be taken back to the lodge. The lodge was a bonus because it had a pool and even for me that I can't stand cold water - it was so stinking hot, that the pool was a cool welcome.
After the Pantanel we headed out to brasilia - which was a sold two days on the truck again - lots of sleeping, reading and listening to my ipod.
BRasilia is the type of place that one should avoid if you come to Brazil - it's a concrete junglepurpose built in the 1960s by Oscar Neyemeyer - in the shape of a plane, but a pain in the rear to get around - it looks like it belongs in communist pre-cold war Berlin.
They do however have a big shopping mall with McDs and BKs. SO after an interesting night out on the turps and about 200 pounds in cab fares trying to find open bars, Mcds was a welcome hangover cure.
They managed to fix the windscreen, so we are heading out to the national chapadas park tomorrow for four days of fun.
Hanging to get down to Rio, but hopefully things are on the way up from Brasilia - seriously, I would avoid it at all costs!!
