The drive north is interesting in that it's much like home with all of the hills and pine trees. A range of mountains but only about 700 m and mostly granite & limestone. Lovely rural homes and farms...very neat and tidy. Forests of cork, eucalyptus and pine trees. Have started to see vineyards.
Stopped at Coimbra for piri-piri chicken lunch and a tour of the University here.
One of the oldest schools with around 15,000 - 17,000 students. It originally was a King's palace but under pressure from the Jesuit teachers he gave it up for it to become a University. Of course it's built on the top of the hill so you'd be in very good shape with the walking. It's amazing to see our bus drivers taking us on these very narrow streets and manoeuvering around the corners with much beeping of the horn to clear the way.
Visited the Library that has books from the 13th century. All of them have been copied onto digital records. If someone wants to use the original book they need special permission. The library is controlled for temperature and humidity as well as the number of people allowed into the building at one time.
