Happy New Year! We have had a great Hogmanay with friends in Scotland, although as you can see it was pretty chilly in the morning -9 degrees and the water in the inner harbour was thinly frozen ( some of the locals had never seen that before!!) We had a lovely Christmas in London, much quieter than normal, but very traditional. From there we went to Edinburgh where we had a great hotel right on Princes Street, opposite the gardens and with a view of the Castle - very spectacular. On Monday night there was a torchlight parade from near the castle down to Princes Street and along to the southern end where it culminated in fireworks - all very exciting!
4/1/09 We visited Culloden and it was very cold, wet but so atmospheric! There is a new Interpretive Centre and it tells the story extremely well. As you walk through the cente the Government (Duke of Cumberland) story is told on the right hand side and the Jacobite (Bonnie Prince Charlie) story is told on the left. There are also tables showing how the battle went - all very descriptive ( and pretty gruesome!). You walk out on the moor with an audio before you return to the building for the aftermath which was very bloody and cruel.
