Arrived in Zagreb by bus late afternoon and caught a tram to our apartment close to the old town and city square which we had for two nights. Before leaving the bus station we made enquiries about travel to Venice by bus or train. Only train was 12 pm on the night we were due in Venice ie we would lose a night's accommodation in Venice @$230, or a bus at 5.30 am on our second day. Budget Hire car was available at 550 euros, no direct flights at all. We should have taken the ferry from Split to Ancona however we are here for two nights and a day.
Zagreb has the feel of a Soviet city with articulated trams, decaying grand old buildings and 70's brutalist style flats and lots of graffitti. Great planned boulevards with central parks and civic buildings. New flat floored trams consisting of five sections with three bogies carry hundreds of passengers. We did a long trip out each way on one of the lines passing our apartment. Not many out at night but we ate well. Our apartment was very large and well equipped with combined washing and drying machine. Good owner who came before 5 AM collected the keys and drove us to the bus station.
